How we score mortgage brokers in Sydney
The Sydney Mortgage Brokers Directory currently scores 600 mortgage broker businesses across the city, from CBD firms handling investment lending to suburban brokers who specialise in first home buyers. Every score comes from a fixed rubric applied the same way to every listing. Nobody pays to move up the list, and nothing here is an ad ranked as a review.
The five signals, and why each one matters
We combine five measured signals into a single composite score out of 100. Here they are in order of weight, heaviest first.
Sentiment: 28%
This is a synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, not just how many stars they carry. We read for recurring themes: praise for clear communication and fast pre-approvals, or complaints about slow follow-up, hidden fees, or a broker who disappears after settlement. Sentiment gets the largest weight because a star average can hide a real pattern. Two brokers can both sit at 4.5 stars while one has a string of recent reviews about the same unresolved problem. Reading the substance behind the rating is the only way to catch that difference, and it's why we treat this as the single most important input.
Rating: 26%
The Google aggregate star rating is still a strong, simple signal of overall satisfaction, so it carries the second-heaviest weight. It's a useful starting point, just not the whole picture on its own.
Volume: 20%
A broker with 4 reviews and a broker with 400 are not equally proven. We log-scale review volume so that a handful of reviews doesn't get treated as equivalent to hundreds, while still rewarding businesses with a long, consistent track record of feedback.
Recency: 12%
Mortgage lending changes with interest rates, lender policy, and staff turnover at a brokerage. A broker who was excellent three years ago may not be the same team today. We weight how recently customers have left reviews so the score reflects current service, not just history.
Completeness: 14%
Whether a listing has a working phone number, website, hours, and address is a basic proxy for how actively a business maintains its public presence. A broker who keeps this information current is easier to actually contact, which matters when you're trying to lock in a rate before it moves.
Where the confidence limits are
We're upfront about what this scoring can and can't tell you. Businesses with few recent reviews don't get penalised silently: they get a low-confidence label attached to the score, so you know to treat the number cautiously rather than as a settled verdict. We synthesise themes from reviews rather than republishing them word for word, and every listing links out to Google so you can read the original source reviews yourself and form your own view.
Paid placement and editorial picks are always disclosed
Scores are earned from the rubric above and from published data only. They are never edited by hand. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this directory, it is labelled as such and it never changes a business's score. Separately, if any curated list, such as our best brokers for first home buyers guide, involves editor-reviewed picks or ordering, that page says so plainly, on the page itself.
Who runs this directory
This directory is published by Compare Finance Brokers, which builds broker directories from published review data and public business information so readers can find brokers with a real, visible track record rather than a polished sales pitch. Rankings are earned, not bought, and the underlying data is refreshed monthly so ratings and business details stay current. Individual listings carry a "last verified" stamp showing when that profile was last checked.
Editorial oversight of the rankings sits with Lena Delgado, Editorial the team. Questions about a specific score, a correction request, or anything else about how this directory works can go to hello@comparefinancebrokers.au. You can also start from the directory home page to browse brokers across Sydney.
